The Highways UK show took place in Birmingham, UK, on 15-16 October 2025, and included a special session on the CEDR Call 2022 Data projects.
Raising awareness of the importance of data to NRAs was a key aim of the CEDR transnational research programme 2022 on Data. The PRESORT, TIARA, and DROIDS projects therefore jumped at the opportunity to present and discuss their outcomes at the Highways UK 2025 show, taking place in Birmingham, UK. A special session was organised in the Digital Roads theatre with around 50 audience attending, following talks about the UK’s Cyber Security and Resilience Bill and the Cyber Essentials frameworks for roads industry organisations.
The session speakers were Naida Muirhead, CEDR Programme Manager, introducing the 2022 Data programme, Scott Stephenson from AECOM, UK, introducing the PRESORT project, Alan Walker from Syselek, UK, introducing the TIARA project, and Ilkka Kotilainen from Traficon, Finland, introducing the DROIDS project.
After brief introduction to each of the projects, listing key outcomes and directing the audience to the detailed information to be found in the projects’ final reports, the speakers joined a Q&A panel to discuss common findings and future steps. Responding to a question about follow on priorities, the panel pointed to the guidance frameworks that all three projects had developed for NRAs to use. They also highlighted the lack of digital and data skills in the roads industry, and the need for NRAs to understand these necessary skills, which they will have to grow either in house or in partnership with third-party specialists.
