DSIT announces the launch of a new independent UK Semiconductor Institute

21st May 2024 | News

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology DSIT has announced today the launch of a new independent UK Semiconductor Institute that will for the first time bring together the Government, Universities and the private sector to support key components of the Government’s Semiconductor Strategy to grow the sector, which is backed by a £1bn commitment.

TechWorks CEO, Charles Sturman has been working with the government to support the creation of the institute and spent the morning at 10 Downing Street with the government and other industry leaders as the launch was announced.

The Institute will act as a convening point to steer UK semiconductor innovation and business in support of the UK semiconductor strategy

  • A new independent institute will be tasked with building on Government’s £1 billion
strategy to grow the semiconductor sector.
  • With independence from Government, the Institute will promote the voice of industry.
  • New body will be a single point of contact to promote the sector to investors and attract foreign investment in British research expertise.

The aim is that the Institute will be established as an independent organisation tasked with making sure chip researchers have the tools and infrastructure needed to drive their work forward in these focus areas and convert their innovation into market-ready products.

Charles Sturman commented on the launch, “Semiconductor technology is the single most important component of all transformative technologies such as AI, telecommunications, quantum and electrification. As economic success becomes more dependent on semiconductors, it is crucial that the UK develops a long-term vision and strategy from research into commercial products and supportive partnerships with international partners to enable homegrown innovation to become global success stories.

As the UK trade body for Deep Tech and Semiconductors, TechWorks is pleased to support the formation of this institute as a critical step in this direction.”
